Solutions

Relisting the Gray Whale under the
provisions of the US Endangered Species Act as Threatened or
Endangered will provide long term protection.
-
Ensuring that all West Coast States of
the US give the same legal protection status to Gray Whales
and their habitats.
-
Currently, California, Washington and
Oregon all have diff-erent levels of protection.
-
To this end, the California Gray Whale
Coalition is lobbying for Resolutions in the California,
Washington and Oregon State Assemblies.
-
To protect the habitat of resident Gray
Whale populations in Canada, California, Washington and
Oregon thus ensuring the survival of the species.
-
To urgently expand the breadth of the
California Gray Whale Coalition so that it encompasses
Mexico, Canada and hopefully, Russian Federation.
-
To seek full protection of the migration
route under the provisions of NAFTA, North American Free
Trade Agreement.
-
To educate state and federal politicians
on the urgency of providing proper protection for the Gray
Whales.
-
To examine the methodology of US
government Gray Whale population estimates since delisting
in 1994.

To carry out a comprehensive review of
all factors impacting Gray Whale survival including
assessments of the impact of:-
Climate change Lack of
prey Oil and Gas Industry Liquified Natural Gas
Works Industrial Development along Migration
Route Seismic exploration Military and non
military sonar.

To ensure that there is no waiver granted
under the US Marine Mammal Protection Act which allows the
Makah tribe or any other tribe to kill the whales.

To provide urgent and proper information
to the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee
so that the Gray Whale quota of 140 whales a year can be
withdrawn.

To investigate the causes of stinky
whales.

To ensure that Bahia Magdalena Laguna in
Mexico has protected areas for the Gray Whales.

To set up at least a three country
Steering Committee with the Gray Whale as its focus,
including Mexico, Canada and the US.

To take into account the massive economic
value of the Gray whale to the tourism industry including
hotels, rent-a-car companies, airlines, whale watching
companies, camping and outdoor companies
etc. | |
