Solutions

  • Relisting the Gray Whale under the provisions of the US Endangered Species Act as Threatened or Endangered will provide long term protection.
  • Ensuring that all West Coast States of the US give the same legal protection status to Gray Whales and their habitats.
  • Currently, California, Washington and Oregon all have diff-erent levels of protection.
  • To this end, the California Gray Whale Coalition is lobbying for Resolutions in the California, Washington and Oregon State Assemblies.
  • To protect the habitat of resident Gray Whale populations in Canada, California, Washington and Oregon thus ensuring the survival of the species.
  • To urgently expand the breadth of the California Gray Whale Coalition so that it encompasses Mexico, Canada and hopefully, Russian Federation.
  • To seek full protection of the migration route under the provisions of NAFTA, North American Free Trade Agreement.
  • To educate state and federal politicians on the urgency of providing proper protection for the Gray Whales.
  • To examine the methodology of US government Gray Whale population estimates since delisting in 1994.
  • To carry out a comprehensive review of all factors impacting Gray Whale survival including assessments of the impact of:-

• Climate change
• Lack of prey
• Oil and Gas Industry
• Liquified Natural Gas Works
• Industrial Development along Migration Route
• Seismic exploration
• Military and non military sonar.

  • To ensure that there is no waiver granted under the US Marine Mammal Protection Act which allows the Makah tribe or any other tribe to kill the whales.
  • To provide urgent and proper information to the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee so that the Gray Whale quota of 140 whales a year can be withdrawn.
  • To investigate the causes of “ stinky whales”.
  • To ensure that Bahia Magdalena Laguna in Mexico has protected areas for the Gray Whales.
  • To set up at least a three country Steering Committee with the Gray Whale as its focus, including Mexico, Canada and the US.
  • To take into account the massive economic value of the Gray whale to the tourism industry including hotels, rent-a-car companies, airlines, whale watching companies, camping and outdoor companies etc.
